Some of my favourite exercises

Moves that give you the best bang for your buck
(in my humble opinion)

If you’ve only got a few minutes to spare then here are some of the best moves to get a worthwhile mini workout.   Heart rate goes up and big muscles get worked - money.  These exercises were always included somewhere in the hour when I taught classes at the gym and are some of my favourites - at least when I have the motivation to get up off my tired butt and do them.

Hope you enjoy!

Basic crunch
I know the crunch gets a bad wrap sometimes but if done properly with thoughtful technique it can pack a good punch.

Knee taps

 side plank on elbow
twist it down

side plank on hand

twist it down (this one is harder)

V-sit (you can make this one more challenging by stretching your knees)

Plank with leg lifts

Mountain Climbers

Stuff with the ball

Getting onto it is a total workout in itself.

 Reverse Jack-knife

Brazilian butt-lifts (with a baby doing the superman)

 Burpees

Weighted lunges

Pushups...
This is really the only way I enjoy doing this exercise.  He makes it fun…

STRECH!

cuddle and play...

I can’t say working out happens everyday, but it happens most days.  I'm trying hard not to have excuses even though I'm two kiddos deep.  If I'm being totally honest, I don’t get changed all the time -  sometimes I just do it in my everyday clothes.  But today, I got those gym clothes on and did some serious core.  As you can see, I got a little done without the baby, and then someone decided to wake up after a MICRO NAP and join me for a little ab work.  I just grabbed him, brought him out and kept going.  That’s what I just have to do!  Thankfully Scarlet stayed down or it might have been a micro workout.  It was super fun working out with Will and he made some of the moves WAY easier (pushups are more fun) and WAY harder - he’s gotta be at least 18 pounds by now.

Hope everyone has a fantastic day and finds a few minutes to focus on themselves today.

So what does our day look like?

(upstairs playroom)

After a few months of ever changing, ever evolving schedules full of daily surprises, we are finally in more of a predictable routine.  Most days (unless we have errands to run, a playdate or if the Grandparents are visiting), it looks something like this:

6:00am
Rise and Shine!
Nate gets ready and I nurse Will.  We get Scarlet up and out of bed and head down to start breakfast.

6:30am
Breakfast is usually the same, coffee and oatmeal.  Will plays with toys in either his swing or playpen while Nate and I dance around the kitchen getting food and drinks ready for the three of us.  By drinks I mean coffee and water.

7:00am
I head upstairs ALONE to get ready.  I get dressed and do super quick makeup while Nate handles the babies downstairs.  The happiness of the kids will determine how long I get to primp and prime.  I usually get a solid ten minutes before somebody needs or wants me.

7:30am
Playtime!  The kids will play, read or watch a show on tv with Dad.  I’m getting odd errands done upstairs - usually laundry.  I also pick out an outfit for Scarly, throw it to Nate and he gets her dressed.

Between 8 - 9 am
Nate heads off for work and Will usually nurses again and goes down for a nap.  By this time I have made a choice about whether or not I’ll go out with the kids for a drive or not.  If they’re happy and good we’ll go out, if they’re miserable and tired we stay at home.  Will has a nap in the car for about an hour (less time if it’s in his crib at home).  Scarlet and I just talk in the car.  I get Starbucks and she licks the foam off of my coffee lid while nibbling on her snack.  We do this almost everyday.

9:30am
The three of us get home.  I prep lunch.  Scarlet will play upstairs in her play room or in the basement.  Will is awake now so it can be tricky prepping food.  He is usually good to continue to play with toys but sometimes he still just wants to be held.

11:00am
 LUNCH!
Will nurses again and Scarlet eats.  I'm not one of those moms who can skip a meal so I HAVE TO eat lunch at this time too.  After lunch I put Will down early for a nap if he's calling for it. Otherwise... (see below)

12:15pm
Naptime for BOTH babes. No if's and's or but's about it...

This is probably one of the trickiest times of the day because both kids really want and need me.  Diaper changes, clothing changes, cuddles, songs, stories, nursing - you name it.  It all needs to happen within 30 min or we miss the window and the kids get a second wind (meaning they don’t want to sleep).  So, I imagine it’s sort of hilarious to watch it all go down.  If these walls had eyes…
I usually put Scarlet down after Will.  We get changed, we read stories, we cuddle, we sing and then she gets her back rubbed (I know…spoiled!!!) haha, If Will isn't sleeping he will chill with us on the floor or in my arms if possible.  If he’s too fussy, I’ll try to put him down before I put Scar down.

It can all work perfectly some days and I’m like; “DANG! I GOT THIS!” and other days I’m 911'ing Nate and bawling my eyes out cause everyone is screaming and I can’t settle anyone down.  It all depends on the day.

Sometimes, Scarlet will skip a nap and just have 'quiet time' in her room which at first I was soooo not ok with.  Now, I'm totally ok with it.  Most days she still sleeps so that's always really nice.

3:00pm
The kids wake up from their nap.  Will is in and out of sleep - he nurses at around 2 ish but Scarlet is usually down until 230 and I just leave her for quiet time in her crib until 3.  It’s also time that I get to workout or write a blog post or shop online or even take a nap so it’s valuable to me.

I get Scarlet's snack and milkshake made up and we all come downstairs together and just hang out.  If it's nice (like it has been lately) we go outside in the backyard and get some fresh air.

4:00 pm
DADDY GETS HOME!
This is honestly the best part of everyone’s day.  We're seriously pathetic when he comes in.  Everyone literally runs to him and clings on as if he was a life preserver.  I feel like we're all talking at once (including Will who is blabbing to Nate) - it's just a big noisy group.  We usually relax and talk together for an hour.

4:30pm
I prep dinner

5:00pm
We EAT!  (for about 15 min)  HAHA.  It’s true, because...

5:05pm (literally as soon as I sit down to eat)
Will wants to nurse again and nap

5:45pm
Daddy usually takes Scar up for a tubby while I’m with Will who usually wants his third nap at this point so I’ll put him down if he’ll let me.  Otherwise I just let him sleep on me after he feeds.

6:30pm
This is serious fun time.  When Will wakes up he and I just watch it all go down but if he’s still sleeping the three of us (Nate, Scar and I) do something together.  For example last night we played dress up.  Scarlet kept saying ’Super Mommy? Super Daddy? Super Scarlet?’ so I tied a blanket around my shoulders and ran around the house pretending to fly.  I started to chase Scarlet and she just thought this was the best thing ever so Nate put one on too and we were both chasing Scarlet.  Then she wanted a cape so we tied one on her (that my Mom made for one of her 2nd birthday party presents) and the three of us where acting like total whack-jobs.
It was amazing!!!

7:15pm
Scarlet goes down for the night.  Teeth get brushed, stories (again) pjs and cuddles.  Will usually is up at this point and wants to nurse...shocker.

8:15pm
Nate and I either watch tv or talk over a glass of wine because Will has gone down for the night.  Well - I should say till about 11:00 when he wants a milk top-up.  After that he goes down.  Well - I should say he goes down till about 2:30am when he wants another feed.  After that he does down.  Well - I should say he goes down till about 6:00am, where it all happens again right from the beginning.  HAHA!

And, there it is.  For the most part that’s what our day looks like almost everyday during the week. The weekends are usually the same with a slight adaptation here or there depending on whether or not we have swimming lessons or church or a birthday party but for the most part this is life right now.

Exhausted much?  I am just writing it!

Have a great day friends

7 min makeup for moms with less than 10 minutes

My daily tools - not fancy, but I love them.

I slap this stuff on as a base.  It goes everywhere including my neck. (2 min)

This concealer goes under my eyes on my black bags. (30 sec)

Love the new bloom mascara by Cover Girl.  Again, not fancy but I love it. (1 min)

Powder over my entire face.  I use this to contour too if I have the time. I think I've been using this brand/colour for over ten years.  I just can't find anything that I like better.  (1 min)

Nude Liner and lipstick (1 min)

BLEND BLEND BLEND.  (2 min)
I actually take a lot of time doing this for the natural look.  I used to wear really dark lipliner as a teenager growing up and I look at photos and kinda laugh to myself. I'm all about blending it in now.
 Total: 7 minutes!

Raise your hand if you have more than thirty minutes to spare in the morning for yourself...

Ok - so, I'm extremely envious, jealous and a little bit bitter if you do.

For the REST of us poor souls (most of us who are probably moms) we need to get down to business when we do find that precious 5-10 minutes a day of alone time.  Heck, I found myself nursing my son and going to the restroom at the same time - so much skill and so unhygienic at the same time.

I thought it would be fun to do a quick little summary of my basic, everyday makeup.  Keep in mind - I have WAYYY more makeup than what is pictured here, and use the extra 'nice' stuff on dates with the hubby or if I'm going to church, but I use these six items on days where I need to just slap something on so I don't look like I just walked off the set of The Strain.

I clocked myself this morning - 7 minutes.  I had to rush because my best friend was coming over with her two boys and the house still needed to be picked up.  This daily combo really is the golden ticket - I had three minutes to spare and I looked somewhat put together.

I'm gonna be totally honest here as well and confess to the fact that I only wash my hair every three or four days.  EWWW!!! (says my jr. high self...  Ummmm, girl you have no idea what's gonna hit you in like fifteen years).  If my hair gets done, I feel like a million bucks but on the days that it doesn't I just use this AMAZING product.  By FAR, the best dry shampoo that I've ever tried - and trust me, I've tried a lot.  Here's a few pics of three day old hair with a healthy spray of Big Sexy Hair dry shampoo.

(I'm laying down cause it was just too awkward taking a backwards pic of my head)

And to finish it all off - a fabulous fish/kissy face.  MWAH!!!

Have a great week friends and to all the mommies out there, I hope you get ten minutes to yourself today!!!
